Best Selling Book!

Exciting news to share: “Vacation Hiro” is now an amazon.com best selling book! Through a BookBub advertisement of the special 99 cent price on Book 2 in the Cats in the Mirror series, almost 400 copies of “Vacation Hiro” were sold over a three day period. This bumped it up above all the other children’s cat books listed on amazon.com (including the Warrior series and Pete the Cat) and held it there for a few days.

Top Sales Cat Ebook Page

For any other writers who may have considered placing an ad with BookBub, I highly recommend it. When I did a free promotion for “Why Kimba Saved The World” back in April, 14,000 copies were picked up. Their children’s list is one of the smaller ones, so results can be even better if you are marketing an adult book. If your goal is new readers, especially for a series of books, these ads are gold–and a bit hard to get. Make sure you request the ad exactly 30 days before you want to run it. You can’t do it sooner, but if you are even a day later the slots will be filled up. And one rejection doesn’t mean you won’t be accepted the next time. Check out their web site for advice and requirements.

I also want to take a moment to thank two bloggers for their kind reviews of “Miss Fatty Cat’s Revenge” this week. Stephanie at Cover2CoverBlog said: “As always, Dendler did a wonderful job making the cats very cat-like as well as characters in this grand story. I really like the mix of the sci-fi genre with a cast of cats–it makes for an interesting and playful plot every time.” And Erik at This Kid Reviews Books said: “This is a really well done book. I think that it is pretty cool, in the sense of space-traveling cats with technology that surpasses ours. Plus, the title made me laugh out loud. The series is good, and consistent. I like that the characters’ have just the right amount of “maturing” throughout each book. Kimba and Hiro are nice characters that you care for, and you even understand how Miss Fatty Cat feels. Ms. Dendler really helps you get into the head of the characters! She has written a good, unique book!” He has a devoted and supportive following, so I’m always grateful when he shares my books with them.

To return that type of favor on a universal level, I want to share a fantastic book that I just finished: “The Categorical Universe of Candice Phee.” I won an Advanced Reader copy of this book from Goodreads, and it was absolutely delightful and filled with literal laugh-out-loud moments. I highly recommend this for everyone, even though it is intended for a young YA audience. Teenagers will miss things that adults will find even funnier. Kind of like watching the Shrek movies with a child. Candice is quirky and troubled and sees the world in a frank and hilarious light. Here’s a more series tidbit from the book to give you an idea of the style and voice. Candice is in a fast food restaurant.

“I looked at my hamburger, which bore no resemblance to the picture over the counter. That burger was gorgeous. It was a pin-up burger. It gleamed. The lettuce had sparkles of fresh, pure water. The meat was succulent. What sat on my plate was thin, pale, and resembled something you might stand on when crossing a farmer’s field. I took a fry and thought about life’s unfairness. They promise you the world (or in this case a pin-up burger), and you end up with poop. This was profound, even if I had no idea who ‘they’ were. I wondered if profound thoughts happened often when you hit thirteen.”

Highly Recommend!

This afternoon I’m heading off to the Cat Fancier’s Show in Joplin, Missouri, to share my books. Let’s hope they like rescue mutt cats as well as pedigreed show cats. More on that, some big news, and a new member of the Cats in the Mirror family who adopted us this week in my next blog. Yes, another cat. We are pretty sure she was sent to us specifically. That’s how it works, you know.

Free Books, A New Cat, and Great Reads Recommendations

First, I don’t usually post on the weekend, but “Why Kimba Saved The World” is free on kindle Aug. 30th & 31st. Making sure to get that out there spurred me on. Who doesn’t love free books? I’m betting most anyone bothering to follow this blog already has a copy, but you can certainly tell your friends and get them hooked on the series as well! Click here for the amazon.com link.

Okay, that said we can move on to what’s new. Some big exciting news is that we have a new feline grandfurbaby. “Mindy” felt that Tabitha was lonely, so she and her roommate adopted a kitten from Good Shepherd Humane Society in Eureka Springs. Here’s the latest photo in my brag book.

Meet Rhaego!

Wait. Let’s get a close up of that face…

20140829_182618

From the reports I’m getting, that look about sums it up. He’s a wild boy and loves to try to steal their food. Tabitha has ceased making terrifying noises any time he comes close, and “Mindy” found them on the sofa together. Hopefully they can become friends once that kitten energy runs out. Yes, I now have a new character for Book 4 (“Slinky Steps Out”) and even more plot ideas. I can’t call him Rhaego. There might be come copyright issues there. Besides, it’s hard for kids to read, let alone pronounce. The shelter had named him Willow, so that’s probably what I’ll stick with. Where will he fall into the alien agent hierarchy? You’ll have to wait until next summer to find out!

I have a couple of books to recommend: “Noisy Creek” by Pamela Foster and “Thursdays at Coconuts” by Beth Carter. Just the covers alone are so inviting! I freely admit that I know both authors, and they are delightful women. That alone won’t get me to read a book, however. I’m halfway through “Noisy Creek” and loving it. The first person voice Pam uses for this story is just fantastic. It even inspired me to try reworking a middle grade story in the first person for the main character, and I’m excited to play with that some. I was waiting for the paperback of “Thursdays at Coconuts,” but I happened to win a free ebook copy through a blog tour giveaway so that’s next up on the agenda. It just means I’ll have to wrestle my husband’s kindle away from him more often. I’ll share the full reviews when I’m done. If only I could tuck away and read for hours.

All the contest entries for the Ozark Writer’s League and the Ozark Creative Writer’s Conference are done and submitted, but September doesn’t leave much time for writing. Between the fall activity at our guest house, book events, and doing some substitute teaching (“Leia’s” braces and “Mindy’s” college tuition are not going to pay for themselves!) I’ll be lucky to spend time doing some tweaking on “At the Corner of Magnetic and Main” before I start talking to High Hill Press about it again in October. I may just need to come up with some lock down time. It makes me grateful for a husband who can cook and isn’t afraid of the vacuum cleaner.

I hope you each have a fantastic holiday weekend. I’m going to try to take some chill out time. Maybe hide away and read a bit. Maybe write a bit. You never know.

Jeep Festival Fun

Our first big spring event this year was the Jeep Festival on Holiday Island on Saturday, April 27th. It was the Holiday Island Chamber of Commerce’s first time to host this event–and a rainstorm came through for the beginning hour or so that may have kept some visitors and vendors away–but we were not dissuaded. Once the skies cleared, some every day and some amazing jeeps showed up, and we had a delightful time meeting new friends from the island area.

We spent the day under a giant helicopter. Can you see Kimba & Hiro?

We spent the day under a giant helicopter. Can you see Kimba & Hiro?

There they are!

There they are!

That helicopter and all of the Veterans statues and memorials around us made me think of my grandfather (WWI) and my father (WWII) and both of my nephews who are on active duty right now. Pat & Andy argue over who is crazier. Andy jumps out of airplanes, and Pat repels out of helicopters. Since you couldn’t pay me to do either thing, I think they should call it a tie. I’m grateful that someone is willing to do it and serve our country, so they both win.

It started out rainy and very chilly. The kitties and I wrapped up in the tablecloth, but the sun came out soon.

These jeeps were crazy and did all sorts of tilting and had wheels going every which direction. We kept expecting them to transform into a dinosaur. Kimba was glad it held still during her photo moment.

Overall, it was a fun day with beautiful weather. We even had the honor of sending off two copies of “Why Kimba Saved The World” with the Elk’s Club ladies for a part of their annual distribution to 700 first graders in the area. Happy to help!

It was also great training for our busy upcoming weekend at the War Eagle Spring Craft Fair on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (2nd-4th) from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. This will be our first time participating there, so come out and say hi.

In totally unrelated news, I’m thrilled to have been featured by The Fussy Librarian on Monday of this week. She requires very tight standards for the books that are featured, and we love that “Why Kimba Saved The World” was considered up to snuff. “Vacation Hiro” will be featured separately on another date in the near future.

I’m also very excited that I have nearly mastered the InDesign program, and print formatting of “Miss Fatty Cat’s Revenge” is well underway! Once that is complete, Book 3 still needs another pass by my editor, and probably another pass or two by me and my tech writer mother, and then advanced reader copies (ARCs) will start to go out to reviewers who have already taken on the first two books and been so supportive. The plan is to have ARCs out in June! Then we start formatting for the kindle version, but that’s a whole ‘nother pile of fur for another day.

Hope you enjoyed our Jeep Festival photos, and be sure to check out The Fussy Librarian and sign up for her email recommendations!

Lots of Updates & Binky the Space Cat

Last weekend’s free KDP days for both Cats in the Mirror books was a HUGE success. Over the five days amazon allows for this cycle, there were 14,002 copies of “Why Kimba Saved The World” downloaded and 1,642 copies of “Vacation Hiro” downloaded. Just amazing! The big difference in numbers between the two books is based on the Bookbub promotion ad that ran only for “Kimba.” I didn’t really care for the blurb that the ran with the ad (something about Kimba wanting to live free in the wilderness??), but I still give the ad credit for a huge chunk of those downloads. I also tweeted about the freebie days until my fingers were about to pop off–and apologized to Kimba and my followers several times along the way. Both of our sets of twitter friends were very generous in their sharing and re-tweeting, and we really appreciate it!  In the afterglow of the freebie days, “Kimba” is sitting in the top 50 cat books for kids on amazon.com. Those Warrior books take up nearly all of the positions above her (there are so many of them!!), but it’s good company to keep.

Only time will tell what the long term results are from offering the books for free. Will some of those 14,000 people go and buy a copy of “Vacation Hiro” now? Will any of them ever actually read the books or post nice reviews? I’m already seeing one of the downsides to freebies. Someone posted a one-star review at Goodreads for “Hiro.” She didn’t leave any comments, didn’t review “Kimba,” and has never posted a rating for any other book (yes, you can see lots about readers on their profile pages). Very odd. Comes with the territory. We will see if she responds to my message politely wondering why she disliked it so. A huge part of me wonders if she even read it. That’s life for any author, and you just have to roll with it.

On the brighter side, both books were just featured at Because Reading is Better Than Life’s web site, along with an author spotlight for me. Sandra Bornstein also did a nice review of both books at her web site. I’m not seeking out a lot of reviews right now, but it’s nice when a blogger and I run into each other in cyber-world and he/she is willing to tell readers about my series.

In that same spirit, I want to share a book series that I just ran across and have fallen in love with: Binky the Space Cat. Ashley Spires does a delightful job of both the art and story in the graphic novels, and I was genuinely laughing out loud several times with each book. It cracks me up that Binky “poots” all the time. Kimba would rather fall off the back of the sofa than be caught tooting, vain girl that she is. The idea of cats in space drew me to check out Ashley’s books, but they are totally different from my take on alien cats. Binky books are great for middle grade kids, but I loved them as well. Highly recommend. You can find out more about Ashley and Binky at her website.

Adorable book series Meg recommends.

Weather permitting, I will be at the Holiday Island Jeep Festival this Saturday (26th) with books and toys to sell. We now have official stuffed Kimba and Hiro mascots and will be looking for photo ops to share with you later. I imagine a jeep or two will be involved. Have a great weekend!

Writing Process Blog Hop

I’m thrilled to have been tagged in the Writing Process Blog Hop by wonderful author Jan Morrill. You can connect with Jan at all of these links.

If you move quickly, you can even click here to get in on a free copy of her new Haiku collection at amazon.com.

As a part of this blog hop, my job is to answer some specific questions about my writing process and then pass the next blog stop on to another blogger. Here are my answers to the questions.

1) What am I working on?

I have several projects in the air right now. Book 3 in the Cats in the Mirror series is in the final stages of my own revisions/editing, and “Miss Fatty Cat’s Revenge” will be heading to a professional editor sometime in the next week or so. The cover art is already complete, so it is down to more of the final touches and formatting/production process at this point. It is well on schedule to release in September of 2014, if not a bit sooner for fans of the series. While that book is with the editor, I will be refocusing on an adult book called “At The Corner Of Magnetic And Main” that is set here in Eureka Springs. An editor at Delacorte/Random House had been interested enough to want to read the full manuscript, but the time frame for that exclusive has run out. In April I’ll be talking with a couple of smaller houses to see if there is any interest from them. I also want to start work on adapting a picture book manuscript into a middle grade book. “The Brave, Frail, and Delicate Princess” has been in and out of my desk drawer for years, and that’s the direction it seems to be headed at the moment.

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?

If we stick with the books that are published, the middle grade Cats in the Mirror series, I would have to say that I’m not aware of any other alien cat books like them out there at any age level. Certainly alien cats are nothing new, but mine are based so specifically on my real cats and have photos of them throughout the books. I did quite a lot of research on what is available before I committed to self-publishing the series, and I think they are quite unique. The reader enters the world of the cat like in the Warriors books, but there is a whole science fiction element and the ultimate struggle that Kimba and Hiro face between loyalties to their loved humans and the obligation to their cat family.

3) Why do I write what I do?

I rarely sit down and decide “I’m going to write about book about X.” Over many years as a freelance writer, I just learned to jump on the ideas and subjects that come to me each day. My first book, “Why Kimba Saved The World,” evolved over a few years. The story ran around in my head and kept getting bigger and bigger. Living with Kimba provided ideas daily. Once during the process I just sat down for three hours and thought about “what ifs” for the story. That brought it to where it is now and developed her one story into a whole series of stories and characters. The idea of “Magnetic And Main” slapped me upside the head, and I had it outlined and the first scene written in 24 hours. Doing an adult book was not in my plan at the time, but you have to jump on those inspirations when they come. At least write them down. Writer’s block in not a problem for me. Having the time and energy to write everything I’d like to is the problem.

4) How does your writing process work?

I’m not big on serious outlining, but I do like to know where the story is going. I usually write in scenes, like a movie. I know X is going to happen, and I know X is going to happen, but I’m not always sure how all of that is going to end up at Y or the whys and motivations for it all. Once I have some framework done, I go back and fill in the pieces and adapt what now needs to be changed. With “Miss Fatty Cat’s Revenge,” I found I needed to make lots of adjustments because when it came right down to it the “why” for some of the characters didn’t end up being what I thought it would. I don’t think I’ve ever written anything straight through from start to finish. Even articles and short stories or contest essays are more a piecemeal process.

Getting that first draft down is like pulling teeth for me. As Dorothy Parker says: “I hate writing. I love having written.” I have to make myself sit down, and I time my writing sessions or set a word count/scene goal. For “Vacation Hiro” I actually went away on a retreat for several days. I knew exactly what was going to happen in the story, but getting it typed up was giving me trouble. I held up in a rental condo through our time share system for four days and just pounded it out–that good old 5,000-6,000 words a day. Then I was very happy because it was all there and ready to mess with. Revising and editing and making the story better is the reward, not to mention having the actual book in your hand to share with an excited reader.

Well, I hope you learned a little bit about me as a writer. Now I tag my friend Cat McMahon of Cat’s Stories. She has her writing fingers in several different pies.

Here’s a little bit about Cat:

Author of the Road Trip Photo Adventure Series, Cat McMahon is a wordsmith who enjoys outdoor discovery, culinary exploration, her cats, and making memories with her family; she lives in the craggy wilderness off the slopes of the Cascade Range in the Pacific Northwest USA.

Flat Stanley Visits

We had a visitor in our house this week: Flat Stanley came to visit from Holly Academy in Michigan. He was sent by my great-niece Sage, and he had a great time helping out in the yard and with our guest house. He also hung out with Kimba for a while.

Flat Stanley hung out with Kimba in her favorite spot on the dining-room table.

Flat Stanley hung out with Kimba in her favorite spot on the dining-room table.

Flat Stanley didn’t have time to help me edit and revise “Miss Fatty Cat’s Revenge” before he had to return home. I imagine he would have found that kind of boring, but it’s pretty much all that I’m up to these days. Book 3 should be heading out to my new editor by April 1!

The other big excitement around here is that I’m upgrading my computer and getting my own Adobe Creative Suite system so I’m able to do most if not all of the formatting for my books myself. This is the biggest expense with self-publishing, and if I can take on significant portions of the process myself it means the door is open to do more Cats in the Mirror books without ruining any profit margin. I’m grateful to everyone who has helped with the formatting along the way, but it’s time to take the next step.

I was also thrilled to have “Why Kimba Saved The World” and “Vacation Hiro” listed as one of the top books about cats by Cat’s Stories web site. Check out her list right here!

Next week, I will be posting as part of a fun writer’s blog hop. I was invited to join by my excellent writer friend Jan Morrill. If you have not read her book The Red Kimono, follow the link to find it on amazon.com. Here is a link to her blog post from this week. My post in the blog hop will appear here on Monday, March 31st.

Upcoming Events

The best sign of spring around Serenity Mountain Publishing these days is how quickly our dance card is filling up with events for the spring and summer! Here are a few of our upcoming events.

On March 20th, I will be the featured author at the monthly meeting of the Writers Colony at Dairy Hollow here in Eureka Springs. If you are ever looking for a writing get-away, they offer fantastic residency programs. I’ll be talking about my middle grade Cats in the Mirror series and lessons about self-publishing. Dinner is pot luck and everyone is welcome.

We are also super-excited to have gotten into the War Eagle Spring Craft Fair at the War Eagle Mill in Arkansas on May 2-4. Hundreds of vendors from all over come together to share their work, and it should be a great day to make new friends and share my first two books with new readers.

This spring I am planning to take advantage of some kindle free days for “Vacation Hiro” from April 17-19 in celebration of both Kimba and Hiro’s 7th birthdays. Don’t worry, I’ll remind you when we get closer. I am also in the process of pulling “Why Kimba Saved The World” from other internet vendors and will be focusing on the special kindle opportunities that amazon.com offers when you work with them exclusively. It takes a while to accomplish it all, so more on that later!

“Miss Fatty Cat’s Revenge” is on schedule to come out in September. The amazing Lesley Vernon has already started work on the cover art, so watch for that reveal in a couple of months.

New copies of both “Why Kimba Saved The World” and “Vacation Hiro” with the updated cover art to show the Silver Mom’s Choice Award should be in my hands shortly. With nicer weather at hand, we are ready to hit Basin Park and any other local events to share them with everyone we can! Many events are closed to self-publishing authors, no matter how great your reviews are or how many awards you win, but I’m always open to new ideas. Let me know if you have an event where I would be welcome or know of something I should check out.

Here’s hoping for nicer weather in everyone’s future–though I do have friends in Michigan who are rooting for a few more inches of snow this year so they can set the all-time record. And just for fun on Throw Back Thursday, here’s my very young self and my first cat, Satan.

In other fun news, I had an interview posted recently at Between The Covers. Thanks, Anita! You can follow her at twitter at RacePointUS.

I am also really excited to be attending the Northwest Arkansas Writers’ Workshop meeting on Saturday, March 8, in Fayetteville. Last year’s meeting was fantastic, and I got some great ideas for “blinging” up my writing. That’s hard to do with middle grade books, but I was inspired to add almost 3,000 words of bling to “At The Corner of Magnetic and Main” that made it so much better. Can’t wait to see what I take home with me this year–along with a few new books from the authors present as well, I’m sure. The conference is free, so sign up and come on down!

The only other things going on around Serenity Mountain Publishing right now are the final revisions on “Miss Fatty Cat’s Revenge.” You know, this is the time where I over-think every detail and fuss and bother with commas until I go a wee bit mad. We are snowed in once again, so there’s not much else to do anyhow. Cover art is already in process, and I can’t wait to share it all with you in a few months.

Stay warm! Spring will be here someday, even if it feels like it never will.

Silver Mom’s Choice Awards for Cats in the Mirror Series

So exciting! We just got the news that both “Why Kimba Saved The World” and “Vacation Hiro” have been honored with Silver Mom’s Choice Awards in the category of Juvenile Books, Ages 9-12, Series.

MCA_Silver_Label_2in_72dpi_Web copy

The Mom’s Choice Awards pride themselves in being a respected source for “excellence in family-friendly media, products and services.” I have heard traditionally published children’s authors express great pride at being honored with one of these awards, so it makes me extra-special-over-the-moon happy to have earned one as a self-published author. It’s just the kind of pat on the back that every author needs while they are working on the next book in the series!

And you can still get both books about these alien rescue cats for only .99 cents at amazon.com! I have not taken down the Valentine’s Weekend Sale because I want the Goodreads fans to have a full chance to hear about it and pick up a copy. In celebration of this Mom’s Choice Award, I’ll leave the prices at .99 cents until Feb. 28th. Click here to share a copy with someone you love today!

Guest Blogger Cat McMahon: Abby’s Secret Identity

Friends, here’s a special treat for you to enjoy this week: A guest blog from Cat McMahon at Cat’s Stories!! If you enjoy it, please be sure to visit her blog and follow her too.

Abby’s Secret Identity

Abby's Secret Identity CatsStoriesDotCom 1

“You must attack me unexpectedly,” Dodger commanded Abby.  “I must keep my hunting skills and vigilance sharp!”

“Yes, sir!  Inspector Catso, sir!”  Abby (aka Cato Fong, feline manservant extraordinaire) snapped to attention, stifling a snicker.

Dodger thought he was king over all, but he wasn’t the boss of her!  She reigned as queen of the castle and was only too happy to exert her influence as he requested.

Finished giving directives, she watched him retreat with pomp into the brushy hedgerow.

Abby's Secret Identity CatsStoriesDotCom 2That he was a great king Abby gave no dispute as she had no interest in becoming street smart and outdoor savvy.  Whereas Dodger was inclined to believe in relationships of vertical alignment with her as second in command, Abby made it her duty to alter his “reality”.

She was his equal.

He could think how he wanted.  It didn’t matter to her if he needed to take credit for things and to think of himself as his highness.  She knew how things really stood, despite the elevated view he had of himself.

Precocious?

Perhaps.

After all, she did have her purrfect pride to protect!

Abby trotted back into the house to plot and plan.  She’d spent much time cuddled up to the man of the house, studying marital arts movies with him.  What no one knew was she’d been secretly practicing the moves she’d learned and was eager to exhibit her mastery, feline style.

Abby's Secret Identity CatsStoriesDotCom 3Now, she had Dodger’s permission to put into action what she’d been dreaming of doing for ages.  Little did he know that he had been her intended target all the while.

Pondering further, she decided to apply some tactics from one of her favorite cats, the Pink Panther.  That flushed feline might look good in comics, but . . . Abby’s sassiness was the real thing!

A Cheshire grin spread across her face as the vision coalesced in her mind.

Cattish delight thrilled her fur tips, and she pushed against it as if receiving a pet from the woman of the house.

With her plan in place, Abby went to work setting up her traps and hiding her tricks.  When the hour of opportunity arrived she’d be ready.

Abby's Secret Identity CatsStoriesDotCom 4The woman of the house started dinner at 5:00 p.m. every evening.  Like clockwork, Dodger scratched at the door to be let inside and ran to his dinner plate.

Situating herself; she laid in wait. . .

. . . 5:00 p.m., Dodger at his dinner plate.

Abby pounced Dodger as he supped and disappeared to watch him from the shadows.

Wild instinct kicked in, and true to his nature Dodger escaped the threat by dodging off into hiding.

Abby chuckled to herself.  She was the queen of “hide and seek”, her favorite game, and she always won!  That she was competitive by nature was a well-known fact; that she hated losing . . . well, there’s a reason for cats to have laid back ears and lashing tails.

Shaking off the annoying “losing” thoughts, she trotted off to roust Dodger from his secret place.

Some secret.

She knew all his hush-hush spots; he just didn’t know she did!

The scent of him stopped her cold at the woman of the house’s bedroom door.  Like radar, Abby tuned all her senses, zooming in on his location.

There!

Dodger lay behind the bed, his most secure of indoor retreats.

Abby's Secret Identity CatsStoriesDotCom 5She crept silently across the carpet to the under-bed tunnel she’d dug through the storage boxes over the last few weeks.  Until now, the tunnel had served as her escape, one of her better hiding places when playing games with her human pets.

She slunk into the darkness, pulling her whiskers close, silencing every breath and waited.

Time passed painstakingly.

Her joints stiffened.  The long wait made her ear twitch.  Her eyes never left his face.

Finally, Dodger’s eyes drooped.  His head nodded languidly.

Abby waited for the tiny, telltale, old-man cat snore.  A few more minutes and he heaved a ragged sigh before the wheezing snore set in.

Easing back out her tunnel she weightlessly sprung onto the bed landing near the edge, where she took up a vulture-like pose, perching over her sleeping prey below.

It was a harsh thing she was about to execute, but she had orders to obey.

He wanted actual battle.

Like Tigger, Abby wound up her internal spring and let go, pirouetting in mid-air to achieve the best bounce.

Landing with a hard thud, she slipped off Dodger’s back end as he shot out from under her with a terrible “yeeeeooooow!”

Her head slapped the wall.  She slid to the floor in a tangle of tail and paws, her fur in uncomfortable disarray.

Victory had not escaped her.  She’d flushed him out, but good!

Slithering from the mess, Abby regrouped and gave pursuit.  She leaped over Dodger as he sped down the hall and hit the slippery dining room floor.  Spinning out until she gained traction, she darted into the living room and dove under the sofa, her chameleon fur instantly taking on camouflage.

Burrowing through the dust motes to the nearest exit, she dashed across open ground and under the man’s chair.  Laying low and peeking below the skirt, she made sure the way was clear.

On nimble paws she crept under the coffee table and took refuge under the woman’s chair.

From the dining room Dodger voiced his humiliation at her surprise attack.

Grabbing the chance, Abby quickly belly-crawled to the wall, flattened her body against it, and edged along to the end corner.

He was in her sights, still caterwauling.

Sitting duck.

Assuming her secret identity, Abby became Cato Fong.

Her inner spring wound up again, tighter than ever before.  Feeling her eyes widen, she switched her tail like a whip cracking through charged air.

Dodger rose from his sitting position and strolled toward her, unaware of he was being observed.

Abby’s eyes narrowed to slits.

What luck!  Split-second timing was everything.

Wait . . .

Wait . . .

Her eyes widened into dark pools of abyss.

Now!

She launched herself at him!

Duped, she hesitated for a split second.

His sucker punch came out of nowhere.

Almost before the ambush had begun . . . it was over.

Battered and beaten, and looking like a mangy alley cat, Dodger limped away, triumphant.
